by Roland Luke, Keith's lifelong friend from South Africa
Keith and I first became acquainted when we were teenagers, bit I got to know him really well during our university years when we worked together in youth ministry. It was a friendship set to last more than 50 years.
Keith had a very keen mind, yet people of lesser ability were never uncomfortable around him. He was humble, always humble, sometimes even a bit awkward, so he didn’t immediately strike one as a person of high capacity. That was misleading!
I sometimes wondered if it was the reason the Board of our little church in Johannesburg, South Africa, declined to support him financially when he approached them for funds to study in the USA, at Columbia Bible College. They didn’t think he was suitable for the mission field. Little did they realise!
In one sense, Keith was the last person you’d expect to find translating the Bible in the jungles of Central America. He wasn’t the rugged, highly practical and handy type you’d expect to find living that sort of life.
By his own admission he was “klutzy” (his word). Could any of us who knew him back then have visualized him crossing 200 rapids by dugout canoe, with his young wife and 6-month-old baby, to live on the jungle floor among an unknown tribe? Could we have visualized him carving an aircraft landing strip in the forest? Not likely! Yet how wrong we were!!
The thing is, Keith was called by God. Above all else, he wanted to honour God with his life and he wanted to do whatever God directed. That much was obvious. So when God called, Keith acted. He took huge risks and depended on God to provide a way. That clear sense of call sustained him through the toughest of times. It also made him passionate, extremely determined, and willing to tackle anything that was required in order to get the job done; ready to cope with circumstances that would have frightened off the vast majority of people.
The same was true of Wilma, whose intrepid spirit and steadfast support, from beginning to end, was both crucial and remains legendary.
It wasn’t until much later that I realized just how passionate Keith was about making the Bible available to unreached people, in their own language. When he returned to South Africa on furlough and shared a slideshow of his life and work in the jungle, I realized, “Hey, this guy is serious – he’s incredibly passionate about what he’s doing!”
The passion was inspiring! I’ll never forget the fire in Keith’s eyes when, at the conclusion of the video “My Life for a Book”, about his and Wilma’s life story, Keith said, “What more can a person wish for than to know that he has faithfully carried out God’s will for his life? That, my friend, is TRUE fulfillment!”
That summed up Keith – he wanted nothing more than to honour God and do what He asked. It inspires me, as it has inspired countless others.
What a testimony! What a life!! To God be the Glory!
